One of the most profound differences between Western and Vedic astrology is how they predict the future. Western astrology relies heavily on "transits" (where the planets are in the sky right now). Vedic astrology looks at transits too, but they are considered secondary. The absolute king of predictive astrology is the Dasha system.

What is the Dasha System?

The word "Dasha" means a state of condition or a period. The Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year timeline that is unique to you. It is calculated based on the exact Nakshatra (lunar mansion) your Moon was sitting in at the moment of your birth.

The 120-Year Cycle

The ancient sages allocated a specific number of years to each of the 9 planets, adding up to exactly 120 years (considered the maximum human lifespan in the Kali Yuga). The sequence is always identical, but where you *start* in the sequence depends on your Moon sign at birth.
